TYF Eco Hotel

St Davids, West Wales

Mid range

Relaxed hotel featuring adventure activities and trying to protect the planet

 DESCRIPTION

Converted from an 18th century windmill TYF Eco Hotel is only a few minutes’ walk from the beach, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the centre of St. David’s, the ancient spiritual capital of Wales. The Grade II listed windmill tower is a prominent feature as are the old mill stones lying at the front of the building.

Still known as Twr-y-Felin by many, it has 12 no-frills single, twin, double and family bedrooms. None has a mini-bar or TV. Instead guests are urged to relax in the lounge bar and sitting room, which has comfy sofas and a TV, or just enjoy some peace and quiet.

Alternatively there are adventure activities which set this hotel apart. These include rock climbing, surfing, kayaking and coasteering (getting around the coastline in a range of exciting ways).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the organic restaurant. Lacto-ovo vegetarians are catered for as the hotel is a member of the Vegetarian Society's Food and Drink Guild.

Self catering accommodation is available next door at Ty Hir Cottage sleeping 8 guests in 4 bedrooms.

 GREEN FEATURES

Twr-y-Felin became TYF Eco Hotel in February 2007. It is a driving force behind the plan for St Davids to become Britain’s first carbon neutral city.

Following an audit in 2006 a number of energy saving measures were introduced: insulating loft spaces, lagging pipes and draught proofing and installing more low energy light bulbs. Its electricity is from renewable green supplies. All the hotel's remaining CO2 emissions are offset through renewable energy projects abroad.

Another audit in 2006 has helped reduce the amount of waste. The hotel recycles as much as possible with the aim of recycling all glass, tins, plastic bottles and paper. Food waste is composted. Old beds, chairs and carpets are recycled and replaced with carefully selected alternatives.

To ensure that the hotel’s environmental performance is continually improving, there is an externally audited “Green Dragon” management system.

Local goods and services are bought extensively. All main suppliers are regularly audited. Fairtrade products are also purchased whenever possible. Garden pesticides are banned.

TYF Eco Hotel supports the work of several charities and 5% of staff time is donated to local community projects.
