Isle of Mull

Self catering cottages in harmony with their environment

 DESCRIPTION

Treshnish self catering holiday properties are situated on the spectacular north-west coast of the Isle of Mull at Treshnish Point, a dramatic peninsula with wonderful views over fields and cliffs to the many islands beyond. It is one mile from the public road along an unmetalled farm track.

There are two stone cottages, one blackhouse (meaning a simple small cottage) and Studio available to let. These are laid out around the original farm steadings.

A further mile along the farm track at Haunn are three blackhouses and one bungalow. “Haunn” meaning “harbour” refers to the natural harbour nearby. These properties have a more remote quality, enhanced by the wide open landscape. They do not have TV, washing machines or too many mod-cons.

At Treshnish there is a laundry with washing machine, tumble-drier and deep freeze for use by Treshnish and Haunn guests.

 GREEN FEATURES

Treshnish aims to run in harmony with its environment. It has received a Green Tourism Business Scheme gold award and signed up to the Mull and Iona Eco Charter.

A woodchip boiler is to be installed to provide heating and hot water for the four Treshnish cottages, the laundry, the office and the farm house and using locally produced woodchip. Some solar panels have been installed and a wind turbine erected. Green electricity is purchased, 95% of light bulbs are low energy and outside lights are on timers to control usage.

There is extensive bulk buying to reduce packaging plus recycling of glass, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tin and cans. Each cottage is double glazed and each has a compost bin for vegetable waste to be used in the organic garden. Eco-friendly products, cleaning materials and paint are used wherever possible.
.
The proprietors source local products and support local businesses. They carbon offset through Climate Care and encourage guests to do the same. They are also planting native broadleaves and fencing off areas of the farm to allow re-generation and have put up bird boxes.
