Spectacularly sited hotel striving to reduce its environmental impact

The Torridon is a luxury highland estate in Wester Ross, North West Scotland. It is set in 58 acres of parkland at the head of a magnificent sea loch. The hotel, a restored Victorian shooting lodge, has 19 rooms, all with en suite bathrooms, satellite TV, radio and tea and coffee making machines.

There is fine dining in the main building where the restaurant has been awarded 2 AA rosettes and offers fresh fish and shellfish, beef, lamb and wild boar. Informal eating is available at the Torridon Inn situated 100 metres from the hotel, on the shores of the loch, also offering high quality accommodation.

Guests can relax in the drawing room with its Zodiac crested ceiling, or sample a choice of over 320 whiskies in the bar or the impressive library. A wide range of outdoor activities includes falconry and fly fishing.

Self catering is also available at the secluded Torridon Boat House.

GREEN CREDENTIALS                                                                                                

The Torridon has received a gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme and, far from resting on its laurels, says it operates a policy of continuous improvement and development to reduce its impact on the environment.

There are low-energy light bulbs as well as energy efficient boilers and temperature controlled rooms. Waste is recycled including glass, paper and metal plus ink cartridges, batteries, corks and candles.

Local suppliers and seasonal ingredients are used wherever possible to reduce the impact of unnecessary long-haul distribution. Its own kitchen garden supplies the hotel and inn with vegetables, herbs and flowers.

A staff committee generates new ideas to minimise carbon impact, for instance swapping from toweling bathrobes to cotton waffle bathrobes so reducing the wasted drying energy. Guests are invited to play their part with savings off-set by buying new trees on the estate.
