Charming self catering hostel aiming for high green standards

Tanners Hatch is the archetypal country cottage just 25 miles from central London. It is located in the National Trust woods of the Polesden Lacey Estate in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Built in 1642 as two cottages it was sympathetically restored in the middle of the last century and retains its traditional features, now combined with modern amenities: whitewashed walls, open log fire, original gas lighting plus electricity, central heating and improved washroom facilities.

There are 25 beds in three rooms, two sleeping nine, a third seven. It is self catering only and there are barbeque areas in addition to the kitchen. Guests are advised to bring a torch and indoor slippers.

Tanners Hatch is part of the Youth Hostels Association. Non-members are charged a slightly higher rate. 
 

GREEN CREDENTIALS                                                                                                

The Youth Hostels Association as a whole is aiming to be much kinder to the environment. At YHA Tanners Hatch they have taken steps towards higher green standards by installing dual flow water fittings on taps and low flush toilets to reduce water usage. As a result the hostel was highly commended in the Envirowise Water Management challenge at the Considerate Hotel of the Year 2006 Awards – the first time hostels have been selected for this respected industry event.

It uses woodland residue from its surroundings to provide free fuel for its wood burner and has also installed solar panels to provide electricity.

It is ideal for walkers and cyclists as the hostel is car free and only accessible via foot or pedal power.

It hopes eventually to receive the coveted “Green Beacon” status.
