The Howard ****

Edinburgh, New Town

Luxury

Discreet Georgian boutique hotel trying to limit its environmental impact

DESCRIPTION

Originally built as private homes in the 1820's, these three buildings, which are now The Howard, are located in New Town in Edinburgh’s city centre. This is a luxurious Georgian retreat aiming to give guests the impression of staying in a private residence. A special feature is its personal butler service.

The hotel has 18 luxury bedrooms, including 2 junior suites, and 3 terraced suites. Many have unusual features such as canopy beds, rain baths, and antique bakelite telephones. Views include Edinburgh's prestigious cobbled Great King Street to the front of the hotel, and panoramic views across the Firth of Forth and onto the Kingdom of Fife from the second floor bedrooms. All are equipped with eTV - a television / in-room entertainment centre.

The Atholl Dining Room with its traditional Scottish cuisine has received one AA rosette. Alternatively, dinner can be served in guest rooms. Light meals are available in the lounge and traditional afternoon tea in the drawing room.

The Howard was given a Scottish Boutique Hotel Special Commendation in the Scottish Hotel of the Year Awards 2007.

GREEN CREDENTIALS

Each of the hotels in the Town House group to which this belongs is eco friendly and a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme – The Howard has received its gold award. The firm sets out to be responsible and thoughtful with regard to limiting its environmental impact.

This hotel recycles as much glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and printer cartridges, light bulbs, plastic bottles and aluminium cans as possible.

Energy reduction is achieved through using energy saving light bulbs, switching off unnecessary lights and electrical equipment, and the maintenance of loft insulation and draft excluders.

It encourages biodiversity in its small wildlife garden, through bird boxes, feeders and insect logs.
