Penrhos is an atmospheric manor farm near the market town of Kington in the border country between England and Wales.

Part of the building, the great medieval Cruck hall with stone flag floors and a roaring log fire, dates back to 1280. There is an Elizabethan wing with vast oak beams plus barns, together forming a quadrangle around a courtyard and puddle-duck pond.

After many years of renovation work by the owners Penrhos Court Hotel has emerged with 15 bedrooms all named after birds found nearby. Each has its own character and decor and a private bathroom. Two have four poster beds and some are for families. The upstairs bedrooms have spectacular views and the downstairs bedrooms have shuttered French doors leading out into a garden.

Its restaurant was the first to be awarded the Soil Association Organic symbol. The short seasonal dinner menu changes each evening.

Martin and Daphne Lambert have owned Penrhos since 1972 and say they strive to run an ethical business.

Alongside the hotel and restaurant they operate the Penrhos Trust which was set up to rescue endangered historic farm buildings and to revive them with ecological and organic food businesses.

It is also the base for an initiative called Greencuisine offering seminars, meetings, special events and courses to help teach and promote the benefits of traditional farming and food production.

There is an organic/ecological shop with an eclectic mix of food and household products ranging from organic wine to a unibike, which are all there “because they have benefits to your health and vitality”.

The Penrhos Project received the Millennium Marque Award for environmental excellence in 2000.
