Overwater Hall

Near Bassenthwaite Lake, northern Lake District

18th century country mansion committed to being a considerate hotelier

 DESCRIPTION

Overwater Hall is set in eighteen acres of gardens and woodland, just two miles from Bassenthwaite Lake in the north of the Lake District. This family run hotel occupies an elegant, Grade 2 listed Georgian mansion, parts of it dating back to the 1780s. Flanked by dramatic Skiddaw it is one of the principal mansions in the area and has been designated as a building of Architectural and Historic interest.

There are 11 comfortable and individually furnished bedrooms. All have a hot drinks tray with fresh milk every day , hairdryers, direct dial telephone (can be used as modem for computers), colour TV, Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, and comfortable sitting area with easy chairs.

The Hotel is centrally-heated throughout, and there is a log fire in the Drawing Room for those long winter nights. The Bar, refurbished in 2004, is panelled in warm mahogany.

The restaurant serves fresh, local produce wherever possible and offers a six-course dinner menu.

 GREEN FEATURES

Overwater Hall’s owners are committed to being considerate towards guests and staff, and the environment too.

Chef/Proprietor Adrian Hyde is particularly keen to spread the word about the 100kw state-of-the-art biomass boiler installed in 2006. It burns carbon-neutral wood chip and provides all of the hotel's hot water and heating needs. Unwanted off-cuts of wood are locally sourced and chipped on-site into a newly-built bunker after which the process becomes fully automatic. He is convinced many other hotels could be persuaded to switch to this "new" technology.

The hotel has also received planning consent to erect a 15kw wind turbine within the grounds, but invisible from the hotel itself. This will provide electricity for fridges, freezers and lighting and excess power will be put back into the grid.

It sources food items locally wherever possible, avoids purchasing products which have been transported by air and will only accept delivery of food items in recyclable packaging.
Glass, paper, cardboard, metals and kitchen vegetable matter are recycled.

It uses low energy light bulbs. All bedrooms have thermostatically controlled radiators, and complete loft insulation.
