B&B that’s taken decisive action to care for the environment
DESCRIPTION
Orchard Lodge is situated in a conservation area on the edge of Boscastle, a medieval harbour and village on the North Cornwall coast. It is the first B&B venture for former television journalists Geoff and Shelley Barratt. Since taking over the large white-painted house in 2006 season they have undertaken a major refurbishment programme to give it a crisp, contemporary feel.
Set in its own peaceful grounds it has 5 double or twin rooms, all en-suite or with private facilities and with TV, hairdryer and tea and coffee making equipment. Fresh local produce is served for breakfast.
There is a spacious lounge with roaring open fire in the winter and for summer a garden in which to relax. One of Cornwall's top award-winning restaurants and oldest pubs are just yards away. Walkers and cyclists are welcome and there are facilities for storing equipment and drying wet weather gear.
GREEN CREDENTIALS
The owners of Orchard Lodge decided to take action to prove they care about the environment – rather than just drain it of its resources to earn their living.
They have installed a new central heating system with condensing boiler compatible for use with solar panels which they hope to install soon. They have replaced all appliances with ones given 'A' grades for efficiency; they monitor use of resources and energy and try to make savings; and they use low energy light bulbs. Their electricity supplier offers a 100% renewable tariff.
They recycle all plastics, cardboard, tins, aluminium, bottles, newspapers and old fabrics and buy as much food and ingredients from local suppliers as possible.
There are reduced rates for visitors who arrive by public transport or on foot.
Orchard Lodge has received a gold award from the Green Tourism Buisness Scheme.
