Luxurious hotel determined to be as environmentally friendly as possible

Built in 1850 Moss Grove Hotel re-opened in 2006 following extensive refurbishment which has been carried out with considerable style.

The 11 luxurious bedrooms are each unique in character and are finished with hand-screened wallpapers with natural inks, and woven Axminster carpets. They are equipped with flat screen televisions, free high speed internet access, and Bose home entertainment systems. The swish bathrooms each have spa bath and power shower. There are also complimentary Fairtrade tea and coffee facilities, with organic biscuits.

One of the four Superior rooms has a magnificent six foot hand-built, four-poster bed made from reclaimed timbers sitting on an oak stage and looking out beyond the balcony to Grasmere. The Ground Floor Suite has a beautiful 6 foot leather bed as well as its own private lounge with leather settee and doors leading to a private patio.

There is a lounge bedecked with solid oak, a “Grand Sofa” and a Gothic chandelier. Guests are invited into the country kitchen to select from the extensive Mediterranean buffet breakfast. Special dietary requirements can be catered for.

Moss Grove’s owners, Nigel and Jackie Gorton, are determined to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

During the refurbishment as many natural products were used as possible. These included natural organic clay paints, Thermafleece (sheep’s fleece) for internal insulation, and natural timbers for furnishings. The original windows were replaced with identical handmade hardwood sash windows and double glazed to achieve current heat loss regulations, and reclaimed stained glass in the skylights.

The mains water pressure was upgraded and a filtration system installed to remove chlorine and pesticides from the water. The bathrooms are stocked with organic toiletries. Elsewhere there is a policy of buying organic, local or Fairtrade produce and using natural and organic materials. Only biodegradable cleaning products are used.

New 98% efficient boilers were chosen and there is a card system for guests' rooms which activates and deactivates power when people enter or leave. There are low energy light bulbs throughout, and the building and car park are illuminated by just 63W of LEDs, reducing light pollution and conserving energy.
