Tudor B&B plus self catering with a positive environmental message

Milden Hall is a listed “Georgianised” 16th century hall farmhouse situated down a quiet farm drive and within a few miles of historic Lavenham and Long Melford. It is surrounded by ancient wildflower meadows, barns and a walled garden.

It offers bed & breakfast accommodation for up to 6 people in the hall farmhouse. All three bedrooms have period furniture and tapestries - and TV. They share one spacious bath/shower room, another loo and access to a second bathroom. Breakfast and occasional dinners are served in the large hall living room, warmed in winter by a large wood burner.

Self catering is available in a Tudor barn with cartlodge which sleeps 2-22. Despite its age it features all mod cons: under floor heating, a downstairs double room with en suite bathroom and upstairs twin bedroom; large well-equipped kitchen; sitting room, two bathrooms; and a large entrance hall for muddy boots and wet coats.

The Hall received the Gold Award for Green Tourism in 2002. It sets out to provide attractive and comfortable accommodation promoting the benefits of sensitively farmed Suffolk countryside and the real value of good local produce with minimum adverse environmental impact - and a positive message for guests to take away with them.

Its website lists a number of aims. These cover purchasing of fresh local produce, items made from recycled materials, goods that are not over-packaged and products which are durable or refillable.

It also aims to compost and recycle as much as possible, reduce energy consumption and gradually to replace gadgets and fittings with low energy options.

Other objectives mentioned include cutting down on a variety of things: car use by proprietors and guests; use of fresh water and of pesticides on the farm, in the garden and house.

Its policy also covers the conservation of archaeological, landscape and wildlife features.
