This hostel occupies an old village school with fully refurbished modern facilities for those who want to get away from it all. It sleeps up to 21 in three, four, six, and eight bedded rooms and family rooms are available. There is wheelchair access, a common room, lounge, dining room, self catering kitchen and shower. In addition there is a drying room cycle hire and storage and internet access.

Lockton is a small village in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park about 4 miles from Pickering. It attracts thousands of visitors each year because of its links to the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. There is excellent walking over the moorland and in Cropton Forest and Levisham Beck with cycle rides along Dalby Forest Drive.

Lockton is part of the Youth Hostels Association. Non-members are charged a slightly higher rate.

 GREEN FEATURES

This is one of YHA's first Green Beacon Youth Hostels, a standard designed to reduce the impact of youth hostelling on the environment and to be a showcase for low impact tourism. It was also one of the first two UK hostels receive the top European Eco-label award from Defra, which runs the environmental scheme in Britain, because it meets strict criteria.

Among the new features are showers heated by solar panels on the roof, dry compost toilet and a system which harvests rainwater and other ‘grey’ water to use to flush toilets. The building is insulated using sheep’s wool and the new extension also has a living Sedum roof, the foliage of which will also provide a habitat for local wildlife as well as adding extra insulation.

It is also the base for volunteer environmental working holidays arranged by the North York Moors National Park Authority.
