Pioneering eco-friendly “green beacon” hostel

 

DESCRIPTION                                                                                                             

 

YHA Langdon Beck is surrounded by protected hay meadows in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is England's highest Youth Hostel, close to the Cow Green Nature Reserve, and the Killhope Lead Mining Centre.

There are magnificent views and excellent cycling and walks including to High Force or Cauldron Snout waterfalls and along a section of the Pennine Way.

It can accommodate up to 31 in rooms for two, three, four, five and seven people. There are facilities for wheelchair users and for families with babies and young children. There is a library, lounges, dining room, self catering kitchen (though meals are also available), shower, laundry and drying room plus cycle and luggage stores, a shop and a garden.

Langdon Beck is part of the Youth Hostels Association. Non-members are charged a slightly higher rate. 
 

 

GREEN CREDENTIALS                                                                                                

 

This is one of YHA's first Green Beacon Youth Hostels, a standard designed to reduce the impact of youth hostelling on the environment and to be a showcase for low impact tourism. It was also one of the first two UK hostels receive the top European Ecolabel award from Defra, which runs the environmental scheme in Britain, because it meets strict criteria.

Langdon Beck has led the way in developing renewable energy for hostels with two solar hot water systems and a 2.5 kilowatt wind turbine. It has also made a 50 per cent cut in total energy consumption, a 75 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and 50 per cent of all waste is recycled. It has installed a rain harvesting system to provide water for the toilets.

It also runs nature watching and conservation weekends.
