green holidays made easier
base2stay describes itself as a new hotel concept with an "edited service" approach which blends aspects of boutique hotels and serviced apartments to offer “a synthesis of what guests really want and use”.
It opened in 2006 in Kensington, West London, with the prospect of more locations to follow. It is situated next to a quiet garden square in a white stucco townhouse and mews which has been adapted to provide 67 contemporary guest rooms with flexible options including interconnecting rooms. Each has full air-conditioning, workstation, high speed internet access, flat screen TV, free Wi-Fi and direct dial telephone plus en suite bathroom with power shower. Also each has a mini kitchen equipped with microwave oven, fridge and sink.
As an alternative to self-catering the in-room 'base directory' highlights the wide array of local amenities including supermarkets, restaurants, delivery services, cafes, shops and gyms. Exclusive offers have been agreed with some of the local restaurants.
There is a 24 hour reception and daily maid service.
“With no wasteful restaurant or bar; no spa and swimming pool to maintain and no laundry facilities to consume excessive water,” base2stay says it is “able to satisfy the ethical requirements of the eco-traveller without compromising a pinch on style.” It is proud of its contribution to its local community, attracting tourists to the hotel, but meanwhile propelling them into the area to seek shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.
base2stay has become a formally accredited member of Hospitable Climates, a government body which aims to reduce carbon emissions in the hospitality industry With its water pumps which ensure that the hot water is not constantly circulated, the master control for the air conditioning which means that empty rooms are not using precious resources, the key-card control of lights which prevents vacant rooms being left with lights on; housekeeping stores with light sensors and low-energy LCD light bulbs used throughout the hotel, their consumption is remarkably low, the hotel received due recognition from the body.
base2stay says is constantly seeking new ways to recycle, and maintain low consumption of resources.
