green holidays made easier
The Apex City Quay and Spa is a modern purpose-built hotel a short walk from Dundee city centre in the regenerated quayside area. Part of a small independent hotel group it opened in 2003 and has 152 contemporary bedrooms and suites, all with widescreen TVs, DVD players and en suite bathrooms with walk-in power showers.
The Metro bar and brasserie boasts a view of Dundee City Quay and the menu has an international flavour, influenced by Italy, South America, the Pacific Rim and, naturally, of Scotland. “Yu Spa” is named after the Japanese word for hot water and, besides a stainless steel ozone purified indoor swimming pool, features wooden hot tubs, sauna, steam room and 4 Elemis treatment rooms. There is also a well equipped gymnasium.
The hotel has been named Dundee Hotel of the Year by the Hotel Review, Scotland.
The Apex group of hotels has rapidly become admired in the trade for its progressive company-wide environmental policy. It has a green team headed by an Environmental Director based in Edinburgh and a Green Champion in each hotel. All staff members are briefed on these measures and environmental audits and spot checks are conducted with the scores going towards their bonus scheme.
Like its sister hotels in Scotland the Apex City Quay and Spa has been awarded Gold in the Green Tourism Business Scheme. It has also received numerous other “green” accolades and has been designed with a variety of environmentally conscious features. Here these additionally included advanced energy saving materials and techniques such as extensive thermographic imaging to ensure the building was air tight and to identify thermal spots; and the most up-to-date ventilation system available at the time.
The hotel aims to use eco-friendly chemicals, to purchase recycled goods wherever appropriate, recycle a range of materials, and monitor and reduce energy consumption. Customers are offered the chance to carbon offset weddings, conferences and other events with Climate Care.
