The Rezidor Hotel Group has more than 350 hotels in over 50 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It operates under the Radisson, Regent, Park Inn and Country Inns brands and is also developing Hotel Missoni.
Radisson is a first class chain ranging from small boutique hotels to major city landmarks and beach front properties with around 200 rooms on average. Some have spectacular architecture and interior design. It boasts a “Yes I Can!” service approach, luxurious rooms and top class restaurants, with spa and wellness amenities also on offer. Previously called Radisson SAS Hotels and Resorts it is gradually evolving into Radisson Blu.
Park Inn is a value for money mid range chain that concentrates on what really matters: a good comfortable sleep in a fresh, clean and safe environment, and services that are always delivered with a warm and friendly attitude. With around 160 rooms each hotel aims to be efficient, uncomplicated, practical and hassle-free.
Rezidor says its environmental initiatives date back to 1996 and that it has a “strong focus on sustainability”. Since 2001 it has combined this with health and safety and social and ethical issues into its wider ranging “Responsible Business” programme. The hotels are provided with a practical handbook and are set common objectives requiring continuous improvement, but they can choose activities suitable for local conditions. Performance is measured and hotels report this annually, and in some areas monthly, to HQ.
The company publishes an annual Sustainability Report for investors with case studies and details of results in terms of material use, energy use, water use, emissions, land use, biodiversity, and fines and Incidents. In 2008 the company decided to boost the number of hotels certified with independent and internationally recognised third party eco-labels and this tripled to 65, with 5 in the UK from the Green Tourism Business Scheme, 11 from Ireland’s Green Hospitality Award and 15 in Germany with ISO 14001 certification. The total was expected to reach 100 in early 2009. Also in 2008 energy per m², water per guest night and waste per guest night decreased across the board. Figures were produced for each brand, for instance:
Radisson energy consumption went down 6% per m² (kWh), water per guest night (litres) went down 3%, and waste per guest night (kg) went down 2%.
Park Inn energy use went down 14%, water was down by 7%, and waste per guest night went down 22%.
Individually its hotels have won a number of environmental awards and commendations.
