International hotel corporation “working towards a greener, healthier planet”

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

 OVERVIEW

Marriott has more than 3100 properties in over 60 countries and territories.  The company operates and franchises luxury to moderately priced hotels under the Marriott, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Residence Inn, Courtyard, TownePlace Suites, Fairfield Inn, SpringHill Suites and Bulgari brand names. In the UK it operates over 50 country club and city hotels many of which have been completely refurbished in its “Nip and Tuck” prograrmme.

Marriott Hotels and Resorts, the flagship brand, provides first class facilities including spacious rooms with luxury bedding, complimentary in-room fitness kits, fine dining, fitness centres, gift shops, swimming pools, concierge levels, business centres, meeting facilities and high-speed Internet access.

JW Marriott Hotels and Resorts is the company’s most elegant and luxurious brand which provides business and leisure travelers with a deluxe level of comfort and personal service: plush bedrooms with en suite marble bathrooms, fitness centres, unique and imaginative dining and exceptional service.

Renaissance Hotels and Resorts are “quality-tier” with the ambiance of a boutique. Features include interior design, a “street” restaurant and savvy service, business library and centre, swimming pool, fitness centre, conference and banquet facilities.

Courtyard by Marriott are moderately priced hotels designed for business travellers with comfortable and functional guest rooms, high-speed Internet access, restaurant, lounge, meeting space, central courtyard, exercise room and swimming pool.

 GREEN FEATURES

Marriott’s websites provide extensive information about its environmental policy and activities. The company says it is “working towards a greener, healthier planet” with a five point environmental strategy whose centrepiece is helping protect the endangered 1.4 million acres Juma rainforest reserve in partnership with the State of Amazonas in Brazil. It also comprises water, waste and energy reduction; siting, designing and constructing green buildings; greening its supply chain; and educating employees and guests.

Specific initiatives include replacing the 24 million plastic key cards purchased annually in the U.S. with those made of 50 percent recycled material, thereby saving 66 tons of plastic from being dumped; replacing the 100,000 synthetic pillows purchased annually with those filled with polyester micro fiber made from 100 percent recycled PET bottles; buying 47 million BIC Ecolutions pens made from pre-consumer recycled plastic; more than 1 million gallons of low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint; and 1 million “room-ready” towels (which save 6 million gallons of water annually by eliminating the initial wash cycle).

The company regularly collects energy and emissions data and publishes environmental reports. Its Social Responsibility Report for 2007 said it was on track to reduce energy and water consumption by 25% in the next ten years and that water usage had been reduced by more than 15% over the last five years. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognised Marriott with its 2008 Sustained Excellence award.

It partners with influential organisations such as Conservation International and the International Tourism Partnership and subjects its performance to independent scrutiny. For example all 20 Marriott hotels in London received Green Globe accreditation in 2006. The Marriott Regents Park is, according to its in-house Green Champion, its London green flagship because it has the largest recycling facilities.  She told ecofriendlytourist.com that recycling has doubled and other achievements include energy saving, and active community involvement to support local charities. “There is always room for improvement,” she said, “and that is what we are constantly looking at.”
