Premier Inn

Budget chain which opened “Britain’s greenest hotel” in 2008

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

 OVERVIEW

With over 500 hotels across the UK, Premier Inn describes itself as the UK and Ireland’s biggest and fastest growing chain. It is also expanding internationally, with developments in India and Dubai. Its budget hotels aim for outstanding levels of comfort and service at a reasonable price.

Premier Inn boasts spacious bedrooms (22m²) which feature en-suite bathroom, digital TV, and internet access for business guests. It offers customers a “Good Night Guarantee” of a good quality room, comfortable surroundings and friendly service saying “we're so confident, we'll give you your money back if you don't enjoy a good night's sleep”.

Every Premier Inn has a restaurant either in the hotel or right next door, promising good quality food at reasonable prices including an all you can eat cooked breakfast. Many have licensed bars.

The chain is part of Whitbread PLC and was the first Britain-wide hotel group to sign up with the national tourist board Visit Britain; this means Premier Inn is part of a quality assessment scheme, specially created for budget accommodation.

 GREEN FEATURES

In December 2008 the company announced the opening of “Britain's greenest hotel”, the Premier Inn at Tamworth, Staffordshire. With the same facilities and amenities as at a ‘normal' Premier Inn, it claimed the building materials and technology used there are not matched anywhere else in Britain and have been heralded as an example to other hotel chains by the Carbon Trust.

Tamworth is regarded as a flagship for the company to trial the best green technologies available and to see which are viable for their hotels in future.

Key features include: ground-source heat pumps using the earth's natural energy to cool and heat rooms and provide hot water; recycled water from showers and baths to save 20% of the hotel's entire water usage and provide 100% of the hotel's toilet water usage; sustainable sheep's wool from British sheep in the walls to create exceptionally efficient thermal and acoustic insulation; low energy Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting with motion sensors ensures lights are only on when needed - an energy saving of 80%; and solar panels to heat bath water. Staff are trained to help minimise everyday energy and water consumption, such as in washing, water usage, excessive heating or cooling. Guests can see the energy saved in a visual display in the lobby.

Premier Inn's parent company, Whitbread, has published its Environment and Energy policies on its website. It promises continuous improvement and to report publicly yearly energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and provide an explanation for change of business profiles that affect consumption.
