 OVERVIEW

Macdonald Hotels and Resorts operates over 40 hotels across the UK plus 4 resorts in Spain. All are 4 and 5 star establishments. The company was awarded AA Hotel Group of the Year 2007-2008 and prides itself on offering customers top level hospitality.

The properties have a unique style and character, from contemporary buildings in city centres to sophisticated manor houses nestled in beautiful country grounds. They offer guests plenty of leisure facilities, some have their own golf course whilst many have extensive Vital Leisure and Spa facilities, offering features such as salt infusion rooms, aromatherapy experience showers, and invigorating ice rooms, a wide range of beauty treatments pool and gym.

Many of the hotels have award-winning restaurants with over 30 AA Rosettes across the group and the use of fresh, seasonal produce is paramount.

In 2006 the historic Bath Spa Hotel was re-launched following an £10m refurbishment and in 2007 the Old England Hotel in Windermere also underwent a £10m redevelopment creating the Lake's most luxurious spa. More recently the Group opened the Macdonald Portal Hotel Golf and Spa in Cheshire, and invested £50m in the contemporary city centre Macdonald Manchester Hotel.

 GREEN FEATURES

MacDonald Hotels says it recognises the importance of reducing its environmental impact and has already taken practical steps to do so. For instance, the Group has a clear food sourcing policy with a focus on sustainable development and work practices. Traceability is seen as crucial, as is developing strong relationships with suppliers.

It has developed an Environmental and Sustainability Policy which takes care not to detract from the guest experience. It is described as simply written and containing common sense and practical activities, with responsibilities allocated to every level of management.

It consists of a set of operational standards including sustainable purchasing for consumables, equipment, energy and chemicals; efficient and effective use of transport resources; pollution prevention measures and emergency procedures to reduce the risk and impact of incidents; waste minimisation including recovery and recycling; energy economy measures for each hotel department; and environmental support to each hotel's local community. These factors will be considered and incorporated into new builds and refurbishments.

The initiative requires an initial assessment of the hotel's environmental status in order for priorities and local objectives to be set, together with timescales for compliance, staff training and the communication of performance.
