Perthshire, between Perth and Stirling

Luxury

World class resort hotel with environmental performance high on its agenda

DESCRIPTION

Located in the rolling hills of Perthshire between Perth and Stirling, Gleneagles was built by the Old Caledonian Railway Company in 1924 in the heart of a beautiful Scottish glen.

Set in an 850-acre estate this stylish, elegant and comfortable hotel famously hosted the G8 Summit in 2005 when world leaders signed off on an action plan covering climate change, clean energy and sustainable development.

It has 232 luxurious bedrooms, including 26 suites. They are decorated in muted colours with sensual fabrics and have spacious bathrooms and an array of modern amenities.

The resort is renowned for its three championship golf courses - The PGA Centenary Course, created by the legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, venue for the Ryder Cup 2014 - as well as the King's and Queen's Courses. Its shooting and fishing schools offer clay target shooting and trout fishing on three lochs within the resort’s estate. The equestrian school provides coaching in all disciplines. There is all weather tennis, squash, swimming, croquet, cycling, off-road driving and the opportunity for guests to fly Harris hawks at the falconry school. Its spa offers the latest therapeutic treatments.

The hotel has four restaurants, including the two Michelin star Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles.

The Five Red Star hotel has received many accolades, including being voted Best Golf Resort 2007 by Luxury Travel magazine, Best European Resort 2006 (Readers’ Choice) by Condé Nast Traveler (US) and Best UK Hotel 2005 by readers of The Telegraph.

GREEN CREDENTIALS

From the late 1990’s, Gleneagles says, environmental performance has been high on its agenda, culminating in the hotel winning the pan European Award for Environmental Excellence in 2001. It also holds a Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award.

It has a special team which sets out to ensure the responsible use of energy, water and materials, from recycling glass, to reducing energy consumption by installing movement detectors on bedroom corridors. During redevelopment, trees are replanted, resulting in a fantastic natural environment for red squirrels and bats, experienced by guests on the woodland walk.

Current initiatives include installation of a new biomass boiler by the end of September 2007. This 1250KW Woodchip Fired Heating System will meet approximately 85% of heating and domestic hot water demand and reduce CO2 emissions by 2000 tonnes annually.

With Perthshire Big Tree Country, it aims to protect and sustain the hotel’s beautiful location. From 2008 guests will have the opportunity to donate a voluntary £1 supplement, per room per night, towards re-planting and rebuilding Perthshire’s natural woodlands. Children too are encouraged to care for the environment through various fun educational activities.

Gleneagles views all this as a “journey” and aims to be carbon neutral by 2010.
