GREEN CREDENTIALS
Owners Sue and Pete James try to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Their energy saving measures include use of "A" rated electrical appliances, energy saving light bulbs and low capacity travel kettles in bedrooms. The windows in the stable block are double glazed with high insulation K Glass and all bedrooms have thermometers so guests can monitor their comfort level and adjust radiators accordingly.
The wood burners are fuelled with recycled old timber. Waste is extensively recycled including cardboard, tins, newspapers and plastic carrier bags and water bottles and only recycled paper toilet rolls, printing paper and bin bags are used.
Water is metered, with showers fitted rather than baths, and toilet cisterns fitted with hippos - all to reduce usage. Guest bathrooms are supplied with refillable Ecover toiletry dispensers and only Ecover biodegradable chlorine free cleaning and washing products are used.
Food is sourced from local and Fairtrade suppliers. Fruit and vegetables are home grown without pesticides or chemicals, and free range eggs are served thanks to the smallholding’s chickens - which are penned in by the solar powered electric fence.
Fern Cottage has been awarded gold in the Excellence in Tourism Awards "Sustainable Tourism" category.
