Outstanding resort hotel in an international group renowned for its “eco-innovations”

This award winning resort hotel opened in 2001 and occupies a spectacular 520 acre site with panoramic views of the River Tay estuary, the North Sea and the medieval skyline of St Andrews.

Fairmont St Andrews has 209 bedrooms and suites. All have satellite TV, dual phone lines, high speed internet access, US/UK compatible outlets, mini bar and en suite bathroom with luxurious tub, separate shower, heated floor and bathrobes.

There is a good choice of restaurants: fine dining at Esperante with a Mediterranean inspired menu, which has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes; the Squire, less formal, offering a buffet or an a la carte menu; and the Clubhouse with lighter meals in a cliff-top setting. Traditional afternoon tea, light snacks, aperitifs and cocktails are served in the Atrium. Kittock's Den, a bar, takes its name from the `olde Scottish tongue' meaning a flighty lady.

There are excellent leisure facilities with two championship golf courses, a spa with 18-metre swimming pool and separate children’s splash pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and gym. There is also a health and beauty salon.

GREEN CREDENTIALS                                                                                                

Fairmont, the international group to which the hotel belongs, says it is committed to running a very environmentally friendly operation. It has an incentive programme that rewards its Green Teams for outstanding performance and in 2006 it was named winner of the prestigious 2006 Global Tourism Business Award by the World Travel and Tourism Council for its achievements in responsible tourism development.

This hotel in particular has introduced a number of measures. For instance it installed a combined heat and power system which produces electricity on site and redistributes excess heat around the building. Gas and electricity usage are monitored with targets for reductions.

Plastic, paper and other materials are recycled and, unusually for a five star hotel, there are also recycling bins in guest bedrooms. Rain water is collected and used to irrigate the gardens.

The hotel has received a Gold Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
