DESCRIPTION
Ecocabin is a wooden chalet in the south Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
It opened in 2005 and has been furnished and decorated to create a light and airy living space with an emphasis on natural colours and a contemporary style. It provides self-catering accommodation for 4 people including families with children.
The main living area is a large kitchen/dining room with belfast sink, gas cooker, fridge and freestanding units. Glazed doors open on to a verandah. There is a lounge with a wood pellet stove as focal point.
There are two bedrooms, a double and a twin plus a bathroom and a utility/drying room with large sink and washing machine. Adjoining is the recycling room (also with outside access) which provides secure storage for bicycles.
Ecocabin has its own private enclosed garden.
GREEN CREDENTIALS
The brainchild of local farmer’s wife Kate Grubb, Ecocabin was purpose-built following ecological principles. It was constructed with local woods, insulated with British sheep’s wool and the internal walls are lined with lime plastered reedboard. Environmentally friendly paints and wood finishes were used throughout. It has been furnished mainly with recycled or reclaimed materials.
Hot water is by solar energy and heating by an eco-friendly wood pellet stove, one of the first fitted in the UK. Ecocabin is connected to the national grid via renewable electricity supplier Good Energy. All appliances were chosen for their energy efficiency.
On offer are a 'buy local' shopping service, a cotton nappy hire and laundering service, free ferrying for local transport links and bicycle hire, and local artists' work is on display in the cabin.
Ecocabin received the Gold Award in the Green Tourism category at the Heart of England Excellence in England Awards - the 'Tourism Oscars'.
