Drumskeoch Farm

Girvan, Ayrshire

Organic vegetarian bed and breakfast doing its bit for the environment

 DESCRIPTION

Drumskeoch Farm is a small family-run bed and breakfast situated in the peaceful hills of southwest Scotland, with beautiful views and fantastic sunrises and sunsets. It prides itself on its excellent service and comfortable and relaxed atmosphere – with 4 sheep, 3 free-range chickens and 2 cats for company.

There are two double bedrooms with a shared guest bathroom and a lounge which doubles up as the breakfast room available all day for guests.

All the food is organic and vegetarian or vegan, and so are the bedding, towels, paint on the walls, soap and even the toilet paper.

There are good walks and plenty of local wildlife including over 190 species of birds. There is a drying room for wet clothes/shoes and a bicycle shed.

The farm’s location is some distance from public transport routes. The nearest train stations are Barrhill, 5 miles away (limited service) and Girvan (12 miles). The closest bus stop is at Pinwherry (3 miles) and the nearest coach stop at Newton Stewart (22 miles). Nevertheless a free pickup service is offered to guests. There is also plenty of private parking.

 GREEN FEATURES

Owner Romi Holloway says, “We chose to be organic and vegetarian because we believe in looking after our planet, and doing all that we can to help care for the environment.”

Where possible all the waste is reduced, reused, recycled or composted. Goods are bought locally to cut down on transportation, or in bulk to minimize packaging. All the cleaning and household products are biodegradable and non-toxic.

The electricity comes from renewable sources and attempts are made to control usage. Low energy, long life light bulbs and outdoor solar lights have been installed. A wood fired back boiler is used for heating, but is still backed up by oil though it is hoped to replace this “with something less destructive to the environment”. The house is insulated with recycled paper pulp and Thermafleece (sheep’s wool) and it has been renovated using traditional products and techniques in keeping with the original building.
