Cumbria House is a family run guest house close to Keswick town centre in the Lake District. It is a short walk to the shores of Derwentwater and has easy access to the fells.

There are eight single, twin, double and family rooms, some with en suite facilities and all with views of the fells. The top floor - appropriately called the Summit Suite and consisting of three bedrooms, shower and toilet - can be let as a whole or as separate rooms.

The dining room overlooks St John's Church to the Newlands Fells and serves award winning breakfasts with home-made rolls and Fairtrade beverages. Packed lunches can be ordered. Dinners are offered for group bookings only.

There is a comfortable lounge, a large library of walking and climbing books and a roaring log fire in winter, and a patio for the summer.

Other amenities for hill walking and cycling enthusiasts include secure bike storage and drying room and there is even its own weather station.

 GREEN FEATURES

Cumbria House has a lengthy green tradition and a philosophy it has called “the environmental three Rs” - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. It has achieved the Green Globe Agenda 21 benchmark for Sustainable Tourism, meets the requirements of the local Tourism and Conservation Partnership Responsible Tourism Scheme and offsets CO2 emissions from energy consumption and car use.

New owners Mavis and Patrick Long took over in 2007. “We intend running Cumbria House exactly as the previous owners,” they say.

This certainly applies to the environmental policy. They continue to give discounts on accommodation to encourage visitors who use public transport. They support local suppliers and trades people together with buying Fairtrade produce. They will recycle guests’ waste if left in the recycle points conveniently placed on each floor. And they use energy saving measures where possible, such as low wattage lighting and extensive insulation, to name just a few of the initiatives presently in place, adding “we personally strive to be carbon neutral”.
