Brockenhurst in the New Forest 17th century B&B and self catering that’s passionate about the environment
DESCRIPTION
Cottage Lodge is a family owned 17th century forester's cottage in the heart of the beautiful Victorian village of Brockenhurst. New Forest Ponies, cattle and donkeys can sometimes be seen wandering down the road. Visitors are reminded to lower their heads when entering the building as some of the rooms have low beamed ceilings. These include the Snug Lounge where there is an honesty bar. It somewhat confusingly describes itself sometimes as a B&B, sometimes a hotel. Yet all nine individually designed en suite rooms have been judged by the AA to be equivalent to a three star hotel. They are equipped with TVs, safes, hair dryers, coffee and tea making facilities and drinks trays – and even toy ducks in the bathrooms. Guests are offered the cooked “New Forest Breakfast”. Also available is a self catering cottage with 3 double bedrooms across the road.

GREEN FEATURES
Owner Christina Simons says she is “passionate about our impact on the beautiful New Forest”. She strives to reduce waste, pollution and carbon impact and has a gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Energy is from renewable resources, the boiler is energy efficient, the building has been insulated as far as possible and low energy light bulbs are used. Paper and glass are recycled and local suppliers’ packaging is returned for re-use. All the ingredients of the cooked breakfast are soured locally and Fairtrade products purchased. Rooms are cleaned and laundry washed with environmentally friendly products. Water is conserved by collecting run off from the roof for the garden, sheets are changed every three days to reducing washing and towels are only changed on request. Guests are encouraged to travel by train or park their car for 24 hours and if they do are offered tea and cakes.
