Country house hotel set in environmentally sensitive restored parkland
DESCRIPTION Charlton House dates back to 1630. Roger and Monty Saul, the creators of the world-renowned Mulberry Design Company, acquired the property in 1996 and have transformed it into a luxurious country hotel, adding an Orangery for private dining and meetings.
Situated in a private estate in the rolling Mendip Hills in Somerset the building features a panelled hall with an eclectic mix of antiques, family photographs and racing memorabilia collected during the owners’ globetrotting.
It has 25 individually designed bedrooms and suites. Some are on a grand scale with four posters, sumptuous bathrooms and working fireplaces. Others offer a more intimate atmosphere and some even have their very own secret gardens providing a 'house party' atmosphere. They feature WiFi, flatscreen TV, CD/DVD player and library and minibar.
The renowned Sharpham Park Restaurant has received several national and local accolades including 2 AA rosettes.
There are stylish, comfortable drawing rooms overlooking the fountain at the front of the house and the gardens and lawns at the rear. Light refreshments and alfresco dining are also available on the West Terrace.
Monty's Spa boasts indoor and outdoor ozone treated hydrotherapy pools, Crystal steam room, Finnish sauna, Laconium, ice fountain, treatment rooms and decadent relaxation areas and offers its own hand-made essential oil products. GREEN CREDENTIALS Roger and Monty also own the ancient parkland of Sharpham Park which they are aiming to restore in an environmentally sensitive way. They have created the Sharpham Park food brand, born out of their passion for sustainably farmed, healthy and natural food. As to be expected it supplies the hotel restaurant.
Initially the food produce includes spelt, an ancient form of wheat with great health benefits especially for those with wheat intolerance, spelt flour and bread, walnuts for walnut oil and nuts, a wide range of meat cuts and sausages from their rare breed White Park cattle, Red deer, and Hebridean and Manx Loghtan sheep. The livestock, bred for their highly prized meats, will also be raised to sustain the breeds, with Red Deer joining the wild Roe deer on the park.
The farm is 100% organic. Great care is going into examining the soil structure to ensure that the animals and end consumer benefit from the produce.
