Top drawer environmentally conscious luxury hotel

DESCRIPTION

Situated in the exclusive St. James’s area close to Piccadilly and Theatreland the Cavendish hotel offers the ultimate in luxury and convenience. Now a modern, stylish building, in the Edwardian era it was run by Rosa Lewis, the infamous "Duchess of Duke St" who was famous throughout London Society for her hospitality and cooking, a tradition the hotel aims to continue.

All 230 guest rooms, ranging from Classic Rooms to the 15th floor Penthouse Suites with their spectacular views, boast elegant furnishings, subtle lighting and clean, uncluttered design complemented with bathrooms furnished by Villeroy and Boch. All feature secure bedroom key technology, internet access, direct dial telephone with voicemail, air-conditioning, in-room safe, portable hairdryer, minibar, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen plasma TV, Playstation console and CD Player with radio.

The Restaurant has been awarded an AA Rosette and serves a seasonal British menu with some modern European influences. There are two bars, the Lobby Bar and the Lounge on the first floor.

GREEN CREDENTIALS

The Cavendish describes itself as an environmentally conscious and responsible company. It has a wide ranging policy, a dedicated environmental team and provides ongoing staff training.

It has building management systems to control temperatures throughout the hotel and “key park” systems to control lighting, heating and air coolers when rooms are not in use. To save water it has installed dual flush toilets and walk in showers to encourage guests to use the shower instead of the bath. It has a heat pump heat recovery dishwasher, a dedicated recycling unit and uses low energy light bulbs, dimmers and motion detectors. Following refurbishments there are energy efficient lifts. Unwanted furniture fittings and uniforms have been donated to local charities and businesses and obsolete IT equipment is recycled through local charities, in accordance with WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive).

Everyday measures include purchasing recycled paper and other materials; and recycling of paper, plastic, card board, glass, polythene wrappers, tin cans, plastic cups, mobile phones, waste cooking oil, toner cartridges, batteries and fluorescent tubes; weekly monitoring of water/gas/electricity consumption to help reduce consumption; bulk purchase of concentrate chemicals, refillable chemical containers, compacting waste so less collections are required and using bio-degradable refuse sacks. The hotel encourages staff to cycle to work and has provided cycle racks. It uses local and organic produce where possible.

In January 2008 the Cavendish was named overall winner of the prestigious annual Considerate Hoteliers Association awards for its achievements.
