Buckshead Cottage is a traditional stone building which has been renovated using local materials where possible, to retain its characteristics. It incorporates a wind generator, solar hot water panels and a high-efficiency wood burning stove making the building almost entirely self sufficient in terms of energy supply.

Other environmentally friendly measures include the use of sheep’s wool insulation, energy efficient light bulbs and ‘A’ energy efficient rating appliances. All windows are double-glazed.

There are recycling bins for glass, paper, plastics and cans as well as a compost bin. A control system in the toilets minimises water consumption. There is a water butt so rainwater can be used for washing boots and so on and for watering the adjacent garden.

Brynmawr Farm is an organic holding certified by the Soil Association. That means no pesticides, inorganic fertilisers or high stocking rates, with benefits for local wildlife and the environment.
