Bloomfield House

On the outskirts of Bath

Deluxe

The historic city’s first eco-hotel, in an elegant Georgian building

DESCRIPTION

Bloomfield House is the first eco-hotel to be established in Bath, a World Heritage site.

The Grade II building was once the home of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress and is a gem of classical Georgian architecture. It has been sympathetically restored, retaining many of its original period features and is on the southern outskirts looking down on Bath’s famous crescents, churches and the surrounding hills. Its elegant rooms are furnished with antiques and fine art with hand-woven silk curtains, four-poster beds, antique furniture and beautiful gardens.

All 12 guest rooms have an en suite or private bathroom as well as television and video. A library of books, movies and music is also available together with a selection of traditional parlour games.

Full English breakfasts are organic or Fairtrade and provided by local suppliers.

“House-trained children and, by arrangement, pets, are welcome.”

GREEN CREDENTIALS

Bloomfield House provides a working example of sustainable business practice for in-house corporate seminars, the hotel’s core business. "I wanted to create an eco-conferencing centre that walks the talk," says co-owner Robert Barnard-Weston.

He and his wife Karen were co-founders of the UK farmers’ market movement. Robert holds an MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice and is a Corporate Social Responsibility consultant.

All food served is sourced locally whenever possible and organic or Fairtrade. The hotel car runs on filtered, used vegetable oil and the garden furniture is made of sustainably grown wood.

Plans are afoot to introduce eco-products and a refuse reduction and recycling system plus schemes to neutralise emissions, the installation of photo voltaic panels and a rainwater harvesting system.

To show its commitment to sustainable tourism, it offers guests who travel there by long distance public transport or bicycle 10% off the standard rate.
