Awen B&B

Overlooking the Ebbw Valley, South Wales

16th century traditional longhouse B&B that’s “kind to the environment”

DESCRIPTION

This 16th century cottage is high on a mountainside overlooking the Ebbw Valley in South East Wales. The area is very popular with cyclists and walkers.

Its actual name is Penrhiwgwair Cottage – “Pen” means head or top, “Rhiw” means hill and “Gwair” means hay or grass. So Penrhiwgwair means the top of the grassy hill. However its owner, Dr Grace Lloyd, a healer and druid, thinks Awen is much easier for most people to pronounce!

The building is a traditional Welsh longhouse with 2 foot thick walls. It is a vegetarian bed and breakfast and retreat centre. There are 2 versatile bedrooms each with a double and a single bed – one with a four poster.

Hearty cooked Welsh breakfasts are on offer in the courtyard when weather permits and Vegan and gluten free diets are also catered for. Evening meals and lunch boxes can be provided.

Therapeutic treatments and Reiki tuition are also available.

GREEN CREDENTIALS

Awen opened for business as a B&B in 2006 and its owners are committed to being kind to the environment.

They used locally sourced labour and materials as much as possible for the conversion. A super efficient condensing boiler was installed along with a wood burner for extra warmth with wood is sourced from the local Forestry Commission plantations. They buy electricity from companies that support renewable energy production

Organic, biodegradable cleaning products are used whenever possible and organic, biodegradable bath, handwash and shower products are offered for guests to try.

They try to reuse and recycle and to minimise waste and their use of energy and water.

There are plans to install a wind turbine, to upgrade the bathroom with more water efficient fittings and to build a straw bale cabin with composting toilet for the owners to live in when the house is fully booked (currently they sleep in a 10 ft caravan called Tracey Puddingstone in the back garden!).
