Green Ireland
The website www.ecofriendlytourist.com reports on holidays in Ireland offered by Greenbox, a new ecotourism scheme
Ireland has long been famous for being green – well before the current “eco” trend. Now its green credentials have been boosted with the launch of an ecotourism labeling scheme by the Greenbox Company.
The Greenbox area currently covers counties Leitrim & Fermanagh, South West Donegal, North Sligo, West Cavan, North West Monaghan, North Roscommon. It boasts unique ecosystems, an unspoiled landscape, centres of learning such as The Organic Centre, a Geo Park (Marble Arch Caves, Co Fermanagh) and off shore islands of high conservation value such as Inishmurray Island in Donegal Bay.
The area is surrounded by water on all sides - by the Shannon Erne Waterway, Lough Erne and The Atlantic Ocean. Many environmental enterprises, ecotourism products and community initiatives fall under the Greenbox umbrella.
Twelve businesses operating in the Greenbox region have been accredited after meeting a number of criteria to qualify for listing. Among the accommodation listed is the Gyreum Eco Lodge above the shores of Lough Arrow in rural Sligo, the Old Rectory, a 19th century listed period home in Leitrim's Lakelands and Ard Nahoo Health Farm in the hills of the North Leitrim Glens, overlooking Loch Nahoo.
ecofriendlytourist.com says it’s great to see this new scheme adding to the area’s many attractions.
